Abstract: In contrast to data on compression, rather little information is available on the tensile behavior of soils. There is, however, increasing interest in this subject owing to problems concerning tensile stress that are encountered in dealing with slope and embankment stability, differential settlement of multilayered pavements, and research into cementation bonds and soil cracking in general.
