Abstract: Detention basins are commonly used to store runoff from the urban area so that the stored runoff can be released slowly, thus avoiding impact on existing drainage facilities. For a given watershed and pumping plant capacity, detention basin size is dependent on selection of the appropriate design storm. This paper presents a simple method for estimating the required size of the basin.
