Abstract: This paper presents a basic, phenomenological treatment of acoustic emission signal strength in soils. Using estimated values for soils, the approach does account for the order-of-magnitude accelerations seen in the field and in the laboratory. It should be mentioned that this is probably a lower limit, for plastically deforming soils will undoubtedly give signal strengths greater then those predicted.
