This technical note indicates alternative applications of the nonlinear programming techniques and the finite element discretization to the limit analysis of shells of revolution. The numerical results are good even though the numbers of degrees-of-freedom used are limited. Both statically and kinematically finite element formulations are general, so extension to more complicated structures is possible. The flexibility and the efficiency of the finite element technique are preserved and combined with the algorithms of nonlinear programming.
