Abstract: Striking similarities exist between metabolism in the rumen and in the anaerobic digester. One method that has been used to improve the digestibility of cattle manure by ruminants is treatment with sodium hydroxide. Similar responses have been obtained when pig feaces have been treated with sodium hydroxide. The extent to which such a treatment might influence gas production from anaerobic fermentation of pig faeces has been studied in this laboratory.
